Jesse Erickson: Growing Diversity in the Special Collections Field

UCLA IS alumnus Jesse Erickson (’14, MLIS; ’16, PhD) has been featured in the “Bright Young Librarians” blog of Fine Books & Collections Magazine. He serves in three interconnected positions at the University of Maryland: coordinator of special collections and digital humanities at the University of Delaware Library, Museums, and Press; assistant professor in the Department of English; and associate director of the Interdisciplinary Humanities Research Center.

Erickson, who is also an alumnus of the California Rare Book School at UCLA, said in the interview that the special collections profession is in “… the very beginning stages of creating the conditions for a more diverse and inclusive culture in our field.” He also is interested in “… the integration of everything from co-working office environments and special collections makerspaces to virtual reality reading rooms for digital collections and mobile pop-up exhibitions. The possibilities feel limitless the more we can expand our vision to entertain new and innovative ideas.”
