UCLA GSEIS Event Looks at How Educational Inequity is Playing Out Amid the Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed stark educational inequities across the nation. Please join the UCLA Graduate School of Education & Information Studies for a discussion on “The Issue of Equity,” moderated by Los Angeles Times columnist Sandy Banks, on Thursday, Oct. 1, 5 p.m. PST. Banks will speak with Times education reporters Howard Blume and Paloma Esquivel on their in-depth coverage of the disproportionate impact the coronavirus has had on educational opportunities for students in Southern California. 

UCLA Professor of Education Tyrone Howard and Debra Duardo (’13, EdD; ’96, MSW; ’94, BA, Women’s/Chicana Studies, Cum Laude), superintendent of the L.A. County Office of Education, will also join in with their perspectives on the issues of inequality exacerbated by the pandemic. This event is part of a series of webinars on “Schools in Light of COVID-19,” and is presented by the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies with the participation of the Los Angeles Times.

For more than three decades, Banks has served as reporter, editor, editorial writer and internship director at the L.A. Times. She is best known for her personal columns, which focus on private lives, public policy and people who inspire and infuriate. A former co-host of KPFK’s “Deadline L.A.,” Blume has won the top investigative reporting prize from the L.A. Press Club and the Print Journalist of the Year award from the L.A. Society of Professional Journalists chapter. Esquivel was on the Times’ 2011 Pulitzer Prize-winning team that investigated corruption in the city of Bell and the team that won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news for coverage of the San Bernardino terror attack. 

Professor Howard is the co-director of the UCLA Pritzker Center for Strengthening Children and Families, the director of the Center for the Transformation of Schools at UCLA, and the director and founder of the Black Male Institute at UCLA. Duardo was appointed Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in 2016, designating her as the top education leader of the nation’s most populous and diverse county.
