UCLA Center for Community Schooling: Appreciating Teachers’ Vision

The May issue of the UCLA Center for Community Schooling Newsletter features articles on innovative and socially just research and practices at UCLA Community School in the Koreatown and Pico-Union area of Los Angeles and the Mann UCLA Community School in South Los Angeles.

An article on “Appreciating Teachers’ Instructional Vision” highlights how teachers in LAUSD community schools have maintained their anti-racist, social justice vision during the COVID-19 pandemic and in its recovery process through the use of technology to create connections with students, families, and colleagues; a curriculum that supports introspection and stems from the lived experiences of students in the wake of the pandemic and racial justice struggles; and empowering students to choose, create, and share their work through using technology in new ways.

Other articles include “Preparing the Next Generation of Community Teachers”; a spotlight on Ayuri Terada, a high school teacher at UCLA Community School and recipient of the LAUSD Sal Castro Award; and a video narrated by Leyda Garcia, principal of UCLA Community School, that was presented at the virtual conference of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) in April.
