As a new U.S. presidential administration prepares for the years ahead, coping with intersecting challenges including a pandemic, persistent inequality, climate change policy and a sea of misinformation, Safiya U. Noble, associate professor in the Departments of Information Studies and African American Studies, will join with other UCLA experts in a discussion of the role institutions of higher learning will play in addressing the crises of our times.
The UCLA Connections conversation will explore how universities can help champion science and evidence in a skeptical society where fact-based professions like journalism and medicine are under attack? And, when we are often divided into disconnected and conflicting media bubbles, how can universities help inspire people to embrace reliable facts as a means to heal our economy, our planet and our culture?
UCLA environmental humanities scholar Ursula K. Heise, and public health researcher Gilbert Gee will also join in the conversation which will be moderated storyteller and curator Chon Noriega. Opening remarks for the event will be offered by UCLA Chancellor Gene Block.
The event is scheduled for Thursday, January 14. To attend, please RSVP at this link. The conversation will also be accessible on Facebook.
Noble is affiliated with the Department of Gender Studies and serves as co-director of The UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry.
