La Lucha Sigue: Envisioning the University of California as a Hispanic Serving Research Institution System

Seeking to shed light on the challenges and opportunities in successfully serving an increasingly Latino student population, the UC- HSI Initiative will host a Zoom event on  Wednesday, May 5, to explore the role of the University of California as a Hispanic Serving Research Institution System (HSRI).

The event will present findings of a new report by researchers at the Institute for Immigration, Globalization, and Education (IGE) at UCLA highlighting issues of importance to Latinx Students. The first in a series of reports on Latinx students in the UC, the research provides recent information and data to further an understanding of the changing California demographics that have led to the UC’s high Latino enrollment, and showcases academic outcomes for Latinxs enrolled over time. Most importantly, the information offers suggestions as to how UC stakeholders can envision the role of the University of California as an HSRI system. 

The UC-HSI Zoom event will be moderated by UCLA Professor of Education and IGE Co-Director Robert T. Teranishi. Audrey D. Paredes, a UCLA PhD candidate and one of the authors of the report, will present and discuss the research findings. Additional participants include Yvette Gullatt, Vice Provost for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and VP for Graduate and Undergraduate Affairs, UC Office of the President; Marcela G. Cuellar, associate professor of education, UC Davis; and Deborah A. Santiago, co-founder & CEO, Excelencia in Education.
