The UCLA Department of Education celebrated the 100th birthday of Emeritus Professor of Education John McNeil with a Proclamation from Mayor Eric Garcetti and the L.A. City Council, and a commendation from Congressman Ted Lieu. These honors were presented to Professor McNeil on Oct. 18 by Professor Christina (Tina) Christie, department chair, and former student Albert Aubin (’71 Ed.D.).
McNeil, who enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the UCLA Men’s Recruitment Center in 1940, served on a cargo ship at the Battle of Normandy. He arrived at UCLA in 1956 to lead the Teacher Education Program. In recent years, Professor McNeil has co-taught an undergraduate course on international development with former student and UCLA lecturer Octavio Pescador (’93, B.A., Political Science; ’03, Ph.D., Education).
