Convocation 2020 Welcomes All New and Returning Students

The 2020 Convocation welcoming students, faculty, and staff to the Fall quarter at the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, will take place via Zoom on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 3:30 p.m.

According to Amy Gershon, Ed.D, director of the Office of Student Services, the virtual event will accommodate 1,000 guests, providing an opportunity for all new and returning students to join in, as well as members of the Educational Leadership Program (ELP) and the Principal Leadership Institute (PLI). 

Gershon will kick off the program with a welcoming message, followed by Christina Christie, Interim Wasserman Dean. Faculty speakers include Cecilia Rios-Aguilar, associate dean, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; Megan Franke, interim chair of the UCLA Department of Education; and Jeffrey Prager, interim chair of the UCLA Department of Information Studies.

Representatives from student organizations will speak at Convocation as well, including Sophia Angeles, Ramon Flores, and Christine Liboon of the Graduate Student Association in Education,  and Maxwell Holland of the Student Governing Board of the UCLA Department of Information Studies. In addition, Yvonne Eadon, Carlisa Simon, and Yadira Valencia, editors of InterActions, will speak about opportunities for publishing in the student-run journal of GSE&IS.

The keynote will be delivered by Safiya U. Noble, associate professor of information studies, who will discuss her book, “Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism.” Gershon will oversee breakout discussions on Professor Noble’s book following the keynote, beginning at 4:30 p.m., which will be facilitated by faculty and advanced doctoral students. Login information for each discussion group will be sent separately via email.

Orientations for each program are being planned and information will be sent directly to students and faculty. Some have already taken place and the remaining orientations will occur on either Tuesday Sept. 29 or Wednesday, Sept. 30, details pending.
