Applying to the Program—Prospective UCLA Students

The University of California (UC) application for admittance for Fall 2025 opens in late Summer 2024.

Admissions Information

Two lower-division courses (EDUC 10 or EDUC 11 and EDUC 35) must be taken for a letter grade and passed with a grade of “C” or better. Undergraduate students may repeat a total of 16 units, and only those courses in which they receive a grade of “C-” or lower. “NP” or “U” grades may be repeated to gain unit credit. Repetition of a course more than once requires the approval of the Dean and is granted only under extraordinary circumstances.

Students entering UCLA as first-year students or as first-term transfer students who indicate Education and Social Transformation as their first-choice major on the general UC Application will be admitted as pre-majors. Admission to UCLA and the pre-major as a perspective student is facilitated by the UCLA Undergraduate Admission Office.

Once admitted to UCLA, pre-major students must complete the internal admission process to officially declare the major in Education and Social Transformation and transfer to the School of Education and Information Studies.

Please note that the completion of the prerequisite courses and the application does not guarantee admission to the major or the school.

Students are identified as Education and Social Transformation pre-majors until they meet the admission requirements and complete the admission process to declare the Education and Social Transformation major and switch to the School of Education and Information Studies. Students in the pre-major will not be automatically admitted to the major upon competition of the prep.

Prospective freshman students interested in our program should apply for admission to the Education and Social Transformation pre-major under the College of Letters and Sciences. For up-to-date information regarding freshman admission, please refer to the UCLA Freshman Admission Guide on the UCLA undergraduate admission website. If you have additional questions about the freshman admission process, please reach out to the UCLA Undergraduate Admission office.

Students admitted as pre-major must eventually apply to officially declare the major in Education and Social Transformation. Admission into the major is based on each student’s academic performance in the prerequisite introductory courses as well as their overall academic record at UCLA. Please consult with the undergraduate advisors if you have additional questions about major admission requirements and the application process.

Please note that students admitted to into the pre-major must apply to the Education and Social Transformation major by the Fall of their third year as a freshman admit. The lower division prep for the major should be completed by the end of their second year.

UCLA Freshman Admission

Prospective transfer students interested in our program should apply for admission to the Education and Social Transformation pre-major under the College of Letters and Sciences. Transfer applicants with 60 semester/90 quarter transferable units will be considered for admission based on academic performance in the prerequisite introductory courses. Transfer credit is subject to department approval. Consult an undergraduate advisor before enrolling in any courses for the major. For up-to-date information regarding transfer selection for admission, please refer to the UCLA Transfer Admission Guide on the UCLA undergraduate admission website. If you have additional questions about the transfer admission process, please reach out to the UCLA Undergraduate Admission office.

Once admitted to UCLA and the pre-major, new transfer students must enroll in and complete the two lower-division courses for the major and submit the internal application to officially declare the major during their first regular term at UCLA. Please consult with the undergraduate advisors if you have additional questions about major admission requirements and the application process.

Please note that transfer students admitted to the pre-major should enroll in the required lower division prep for the major and apply to the major during their first regular term at UCLA.
