Marcelo Suárez-Orozco, Wasserman Dean of UCLA’s Graduate School of Education & Information Studies, and Professor of Education Robert Teranishi participated in a panel discussion on the experiences of undocumented college students at the Center for American Progress on March 31. The co-directors of the Institute for Immigration, Globalization, and Education at UCLA shared the findings of their recent report, “In the Shadows of the Ivory Tower: Undocumented Undergraduates and the Liminal State of Immigration Reform,” which they authored with IGE co-director Professor Carola Suárez- Orozco.
Felicia Escobar, Special Assistant to the President for Immigration Policy, opened the panel discussion, which was moderated by Zenén Jaimes Pérez, senior policy analyst, Generation Progress. Daniel Porterfield, president of Franklin & Marshall College; Laura Bohórquez, coordinator, Dream Education Empowerment Program at United We Dream; and Catalina Adorno, student and organizer at New Jersey Youth for Immigrant Liberation, rounded out the panel. Their discussion, which focused on the stressful environment that undocumented students inhabit, examined issues such as current immigration laws, state and university policies, and the shortage of campus resources. The discussion also explored potential solutions for undocumented students despite an uncertain political climate.
