Women’s School Leadership Academy: Next Webinar Discusses “The Courage to Lead”
The UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies and the UCLA Women’s School Leadership Academy (WSLA) will present the webinar, “The Courage to Lead: Women’s Narrative in Times of Crisis” on Thursday, Oct. 22, 5-6 p.m. PST.
The panel’s moderator is Joanne Culverhouse, Ed.D., superintendent of La Habra City Schools. The other panelists are Cristina de Jesus, Ed.D., president & CEO of Green Dot Public Schools California; Erin Richison, Ed.D., senior director, District and School Improvement, San Diego County Office of Education and Lolli Lucas, assistant head, of the Buckley School in Los Angeles. Among them, they have more than 80 years of experience in schools.
The discussion will focus on questions surrounding women acting courageously for schools and students from the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and currently, in its continuing phases; and engaging with the Black Lives Matter movement in schools and school systems.
According to Linda Rose, Ph.D., who directs WSLA, “It’s essential to understand the observable and hidden tests in ongoing crises and the capacities needed to sustain goal-driven leadership.”
“School systems and schools have struggled with questions about how to deliver meaningful education during the continuing pandemic,” Rose says. “Some school systems have struggled to reopen and then had to close again because of fluctuations in the numbers of COVID-19 cases. Every school system has been confronted by the need to examine and understand their own approaches to social justice.”
Culverhouse received her undergraduate and two master’s degrees at the University of Nevada, Reno and she earned her doctorate of education at the University of California, Los Angeles. Richison leads a team of former school principals who support current and future administrators throughout the county. She was a school principal for many years.
De Jesus leads Green Dot Public Schools California, a charter management organization serving over 11,000 students in 19 public charter schools across Los Angeles. She received three degrees from UCLA, including her doctorate in Educational Leadership. Lucas is the assistant head of Buckley School and has many years of leadership experience in independent schools as well as teaching courses in leadership and civil rights.
