UCLA Community School: 3rd Annual Art Auction to Support College-Bound Seniors

As the festive season approaches, students at UCLA Community School are working like Santa’s elves to create paintings, to be featured and sold in the 3 annual Art Auction on Thursday, Dec. 10. Their teacher, Grace Maddox, says that her students have been working “like elves in Santa’s workshop.”

“They are excited about the cause of the event – providing scholarships for their fellow students – and are very hopeful that their art will sell,” she says. “Much love and care goes into their work; some of the paintings have taken more than 12 hours to create.”

For the last two years, current and former students in Maddox’s art classes have donated their work for the auction, the proceeds from which go toward scholarships for graduating seniors. Last year, approximately $7,600 was raised from not only the auction, but from individual gifts to the UCLA Community School Scholarship Fund.

“At UCLA Community School, we are taught about helping others and community,” says Marlyn Sanchez, a senior who donated her painting of the Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools campus – where UCLA Community School is located – to the auction when she was a freshman. “What better way to do this than help a deserving classmate go to college with money from our art auction.”
