In Case You Missed It: Webinars Showcase UCLA Ed & IS Expertise
This spring saw the launching of several new webinar series presented by faculty and experts at the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies. In addition, the on-the-ground knowledge and practices of teacher educators and social justice scholars at GSE&IS was also highlighted in the UCLA Connections series of conversations.
The recently formed UCLA Transformative Coaching & Leadership Academy, an initiative of the UCLA Department of Education, continues its series of “Critical Conversations: Transformative Coaching and Leadership,” on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m., PST, with Sue Enquist, former UCLA Women’s Softball coach and first All-American women’s softball player, who will moderate a conversation with Jill Ellis, two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup winning coach and former UCLA Women’s Soccer coach, and Megan Kahn, CEO of WeCOACH, on strategies for amplifying athletes’ voices for social justice; maintaining standards and a culture of thriving in a sports environment focused on superstars; and ways to recruit more women to the field of coaching.
Past events include Coach Enquist’s conversations with Valorie Kondos-Field, former UCLA Women’s Gymnastics coach on June 30; and Martin Jarmond, the recently appointed director of UCLA Athletics, on Aug. 4.
Examining school leadership through the lens of social justice is the aim of webinars showcasing the experiences of alumni of UCLA’s Educational Leadership Program (ELP) and other school leaders. The series, “Transformative Voices: Educators for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion” is presented by the ELP’s Women’s School Leadership Academy. An upcoming event in October will look at “The Courage to Lead: Women’s Narratives in Times of Crisis”; date and time TBD.
Past events include a discussion on how schools are facing twin pandemics of racism and COVID-19 on July 21, and a talk about equity in schools on Aug. 4.
The challenges of balancing health and safety, quality of education, and equity among all students is addressed in the webinar series on “Schools in Light of COVID-19.” The next event in this series, “The Issue of Equity,” will take place on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 5 p.m., PST. This conversation will be moderated by Sandy Banks, columnist for the Los Angeles Times, and feature L.A. Times education reporters Paloma Esquivel and Howard Blume. UCLA Professor of Education Tyrone Howard and LACOE Superintendent Debra Duardo will also take part in the discussion.
The inaugural event was held on Aug. 5, featuring a discussion moderated by Howard Blume, Los Angeles Times education reporter. Speakers included Georgia Lazo, principal, UCLA Lab School; Dr. Nava Yeganeh, specialist in pediatrics and infectious disease, UCLA Health; and Tyrone Howard, UCLA professor of education and director of the UCLA Pritzker Center for Strengthening Children and Families.
In addition, Professor Howard and Annamarie Francois, executive director of UCLA Center X, took part in UCLA Connections, a series of conversations presented by the University.
Howard joined Nicole Green, executive director of UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services, to discuss “Processing racial trauma” on June 10; and “Where do we go from here? Creating an anti-racist climate of support” on July 29. Francois drew perspectives from UCLA Center X’s Erin Powers and Daniel Diaz, who shared their experiences as teacher educators and parents who work from home while overseeing their children’s education in the new normal of remote learning with “How can parents successfully cope with remote learning?” on Sept. 16.
