A Message About Today's Supreme Court Decision from Wasserman Dean Christina Christie

By Staff
UCLA Wasserman Dean Christina (Tina) Christie

Today’s announcement from the U.S. Supreme Court, although widely expected, is disheartening to say the least. For decades, affirmative action has played a crucial role in addressing historical injustices and increasing access to higher education for students of color. Today's decision directly undermines our efforts to build diverse learning environments that foster critical thinking, empathy, and cultural understanding. Indeed, it represents a clear setback in our work toward equity and justice.

But we have faced these challenges before, and I have faith in our collective commitment to creating a more just society. Responding to this ruling will require us to work together with other institutions as well as policymakers and community organizations to ensure equal educational opportunities for all students. This new legal landscape demands creative thinking and innovative approaches to ensuring equity, diversity, and inclusion. The UCLA School of Education & Information Studies remains committed to this work, and I have no doubt that we will rise to the challenge.

In unity-

Tina
