Guillén's research and teaching interests are focused on partnerships between teacher education programs and the students, families, and communities they serve. In working towards modeling more democratic, less hierarchical teacher education programs, she is interested in:
- Community-based teacher education programs working towards social transformation
- Pre-service teacher learning, particularly teachers of Color, and their conceptualization of the work of teaching
- The intersection of learning theories, critical pedagogies, and the history of schooling as a space for both reproduction and revolution
This research includes an attention to rethinking the curriculum and pedagogy of teacher education programs to include diverse epistemological theories and pedagogical frameworks. Shifting these lenses has implications for the work of culturally relevant, responsive, and sustaining pedagogies in both K-12 classrooms and teacher education programs.
