Who is eligible to participate?

  • If you graduated in Fall 2021 or Winter 2022, you are eligible. OR
    If you are a candidate for a degree, you are eligible only if you are: Ed Major: Spring or Summer 2022 graduate; Fall 2022 graduate with OSS approval.
  • Ed Minor: Spring or Summer 2022 graduate.
  • M.A./M.Ed./MLIS: have successfully completed coursework and have advisor verification of successful exam/portfolio/inquiry/thesis completion prior to Friday, June 10, 2022.
  • Ph.D./ Ed.D.: your chair(s) must verify you will file the dissertation no later than September 10, 2022. OSS will verify via email.

How do I let SE&IS know I am graduating?

You must submit the "Declaration of Commencement" form NO LATER than May 13, 2022.

Can the Privacy Release Status prevent my name from appearing in the commencement program?

In the case that you would NOT wish for your name to be printed in the SE&IS Commencement program, please note this on the Declaration of Commencement form. Otherwise, your name will be printed exactly how you submit it on your Declaration form.

How will my name appear in the program?

Your name will be printed EXACTLY as you print it on the Declaration of Commencement form.

I am not participating but still want my name in the program. What do I do?

Please complete the Declaration of Commencement form. State you are not coming but want your name printed.

Student Speakers

One graduate student speaker from each department and one undergraduate Education & Social Transformation Major student speaker will be selected through a peer selection process. Student speaker guests will receive reserved seating. Information will come separately via email. Speakers will be selected by mid-to late May.

Student Marshals

One graduate student marshal is selected from each department to lead candidates into the commencement ceremony. Student marshals are nominated by department faculty not only for their academic excellence but also for their service to the SE&IS community.

Student Singer

One student singer will be selected from SE&IS to sing "Hail to the Hills of Westwood." Auditions will be held in May and an announcement will be sent via email. Student singer guests will receive reserved seating. The submission deadline is set for May 13, 2022.

Announcements, Cap and Gown

What color tassel and hood will I be wearing?

Undergraduate students receive a tassel with their bachelor's unit. No hood is used for undergraduate students.

Ceremony Photographer

Grad Images, (800) 261-2576 Please remember that each candidate will be photographed and will have the opportunity to purchase prints. Proofs will be e-mailed to you within 48 hours of the ceremony. On the card you receive when lining up at Commencement, please be sure to clearly write your email on the card. You will also be able to view photos here.

Diplomas

Diplomas will be available approximately four to six months after graduation. A form is available on the Registrar’s website for having your diploma mailed to you.

Parking

Wilson Plaza can be found closest to Lots 4 & 5. The parking fee per vehicle is $14.

Disability Requests

If you are a student with a disability, or if you are inviting a guest who needs special assistance to attend Commencement, please call the Center for Accessible Education (CAE) at 310-825-1501, 310-206-6083 (TDD), or stop by A-255 Murphy.

Do guests need tickets to attend?

Tickets are NOT required for this event. Open seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Guests are encouraged to arrive early to get the seating of their choice.

Does Graduate Division still hold the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony? Yes.

This year's ceremony will be held in Royce Hall on Thursday, June 9, 2022, at 3 p.m. Check-in begins at 1:30 p.m. It is our campus' only university-wide degree conferral ceremony and the only one of its kind in the UC system. Anyone wishing to participate must have filed his/her dissertation by May 31, 2022. Students are contacted directly by Graduate Division for participation. Information can be found here.
