The inaugural Kenneth Karmiole Lecture in Archival Studies will be presented by Professor Heather MacNeil of the University of Toronto on Monday, Oct. 27, 4-7 p.m., in the Presentation Room of UCLA’s Charles E. Young Library. MacNeil will speak on “The Archive/Archives as Text: Themes and Variations.” The lecture is open to the public and should be attended by anyone with an interest in collections, cultural histories, libraries, museum studies, and archives.
Professor MacNeil is a member of the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto, where she teaches courses on archival concepts and issues, the history of record keeping, and archival representation. Her research and publications focus on the theory and methods of archival arrangement and description and the authenticity of records in analog and digital environments. Currently, she is exploring archival description as a rhetorical genre in traditional and Web-based environments. Her books include “Trusting Records” (2000) and co-editor, along with Terry Eastwood, of Currents of Archival Thinking (2010).
This lecture series was established thanks to a very generous gift to UCLA from Kenneth Karmiole, a Los Angeles philanthropist and alumnus of the UCLA Information Studies Department (’71, MLIS). Karmiole is President of Kenneth Karmiole, Bookseller, Inc., an antiquarian bookselling firm specializing in early printed books and located in Santa Monica.
As a philanthropist, Karmiole provides financial support to various libraries and educational programs in Southern California. He has established endowment funds at UCLA and at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). At UCLA, Karmiole has funded an annual lecture series on the History of the Book Trade at the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library; an endowment for the purchase of rare books & manuscripts at the discretion of the UCLA University Librarian; and endowments for financial aid to students in the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies. This most recent gift to establish the Kenneth Karmiole Lecture in Archival Studies pays tribute to the UCLA Archival Studies Program in the Department of Information Studies as one of the premier programs of its kind globally. His gift will ensure the funds to bring speakers from around the world to UCLA as a resource for all fields related to archival studies.
Karmiole currently serves on the advisory committees of the California Rare Book School at UCLA, the UCLA Research Library Board of Visitors, and the Library Council at UCSB. He is a member of the Director’s Advisory Council of the William Andrews Clark Library and of the Board of Visitors of the UCLA Graduate School of Education & Information Studies. Since the 1970s Karmiole has served three terms on the National Board of the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America. He currently serves as the President of the Southern California Chapter of the ABAA. Karmiole received the Distinguished Alumni Award for 2011 from the UCLA Library and Information Studies Alumni Association.
