DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly Learning Café series highlighting the community engaged work of our faculty and graduate students. Listen\, learn and engage with the work of our school. \n\n\n\nFeaturing Nicole (Nikki) Barry\, PhD.\, Assistant Professor of Environmental Justice Education \n\n\n\nCommunity-based research design (CBDR) is an approach to research that prioritizes community goals\, voices\, desires\, needs\, and perspectives. While many researchers and community members are interested in utilizing this research model to center community strengths\, build capacity\, and even nation-build\, it is not always clear how to integrate community participation into each aspect of the research process. In particular\, data analysis and interpretation may seem more challenging when incorporating community participation. Community participation in data analysis is important to ensure that data is defined appropriately\, validly measured\, managed correctly\, and interpreted to achieve the goals of the community and the research team. DESCRIPTION:Books: A limited number of books will be available at no cost for UCLA students\, first come first served \n\n\n\nLaura Chávez-Moreno is an award-winning researcher\, qualitative social scientist\, and assistant professor at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in the Department of Chicana/o & Central American Studies and Department of Education. How do schools make us think about race? And where does Latinx fit in? In How Schools Make Race\, Laura Chávez-Moreno shows how schools play a pivotal role in shaping the concept of race and racialized groups. In this talk\, she tells the story of how the teachers and students in a racially diverse Spanish-English bilingual education program grappled with conflicting ideas about race and about the Latinx category. She explores how curriculum\, pedagogy\, policy\, and language interplay to form\, reinforce\, and blur the boundaries of racialized groups. Chávez-Moreno challenges us to reconsider what makes race and invites us to see Latinx as a racialized group. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our next IS Colloquium on November 7\, 2:00-4:00 p.m. in the Reading Room\, 3340 Moore Hall. There will be refreshments to follow. This will be the first of several colloquia this year that feature the research of completing IS doctoral students. \n\n\n\nThe Bible is Our Deed: Owning the Past and Heritage Territoriality in Israel and Palestine \n\n\n\nYair Agmon \n\n\n\nAbstract \n\n\n\nIn recent years\, the Israeli government and private settler organizations have invested heavily in developing heritage tourism in Palestinian Occupied Territories. Governmental grants and state authorities have funded archaeological excavations\, poured money into the tourism industry\, and used the force of military actions to secure Israeli itineraries moving through Palestinian territory. This heritage tourism industry focuses on promoting a powerful imaginary based on a messianic interpretation of biblical scripture\, in which Israeli nationalism is projected into antiquity to claim Jewish indigeneity and ownership over the land. Yet the Israeli state and private settler organizations have also used the administrative infrastructure and state power of heritage management to dispossess and displace Palestinians. Land use policies\, economic disinvestments\, and legal actions have transformed sites of heritage in which Palestinians live or work into sites of Jewish settlements. I describe this process as heritage territoriality\, rendering symbolic claims to origins into places of dwelling\, materializing Israel’s first Prime Minister David Ben Gurion’s famous idiom that “The Bible is Our Deed.”  \n\n\n\n​This presentation will map the development of heritage territoriality over the last 25 years across Israel and Palestine\, closely examining The City of David National Park in East Jerusalem as the primary case study. Through this survey\, I demonstrate how heritage regimes and cultural memory have produced a unique type of settlement that obfuscates the colonial violence of its own making through tourism. I discuss how\, ultimately\, Jewish settlers’ encounter with the material ruins of ancient Jewish life\, interpreted through messianic readings of scripture\, has resulted in a colonial theory of property based on a divine right to land that has produced racialized structures of identity\, territory\, and accumulation. \n\n\n\nBio \n\n\n\nYair Agmon is a scholar\, artist\, and activist. He is currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Information Studies at UCLA and holds an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts.

This in-person event will be held at Room 1500\, UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. \n\n\n\nDescription: This talk examines how classification amplifies or alleviates the exclusion of marginalized people in healthcare. Through the case of epilepsy\, the talk shows how reductionist classifications lead to narrow definitions of wellbeing and reinstate gendered\, racist\, classist\, and ableist hierarchies. These findings advance our understanding of how experts navigate classificatory decisions and of technology’s role in amplifying inequality and how to work towards a more just society. \n\n\n\nThe talk will be followed by a Q&A and a reception.

DESCRIPTION:The UCLA Writing Project invites you to the 34th annual With Different Eyes Conference\, November 2\, 2024. We focus on access and equity for all students\, with our multilingual and multicultural students center-stage\, including newcomers\, students approaching advanced literacy\, and speakers of African American English and indigenous languages. We attend to a spectrum of social justice issues—connected to matters of race and gender\, environment\, media. Given we are the Writing Project\, we love to demonstrate how writing empowers all students\, up and down the grade levels and across content areas. \n\n\n\nOur conference theme this year: The Power of Words\, The Strength of Story.  Many students don’t think they have any stories to tell. DESCRIPTION:The UCLA Department of Education Early-Career Scholar Series invites Department faculty\, staff\, and students to come together to engage with early-career scholars and their research\, and build community over a Department lunch at noon following the session. At each session\, an early-career scholar will either present their research or workshop a paper or study in progress facilitated by an advanced-career scholar. \n\n\n\nThis monthly event strives to foster community and connection within our Department\, come together to learn more about our early-career scholars\, and support their work. Coffee and refreshments will be served. \n\n\n\nIn this session\, Dr. Mancevice will workshop a preliminary analysis of data from a yearlong study of young children’s pathways of becoming readers. The primary data source for the analysis was a series of photograph-based interviews conducted during three periods of the school year. Dr. Mancevice encourages comments and questions regarding the analysis as well as next steps for future research. \n\n\n\nDr. Mancevice is an Assistant Professor-in-Residence in the Social Research Methodology Division and Associate Director of CONNECT. Her research focuses on reading instruction\, curriculum design\, and teachers’ professional learning. She is especially interested in collaborative approaches to designing and conducting research with educators. Dr. Mancevice’s current work examines young children’s pathways of becoming readers from their perspectives.

Sign up for the event on this  Google Form. \n\n\n\nUser-Centered Knowledge Graph Design \n\n\n\nThis presentation outlines the research I conducted as a part of my PhD dissertation\, in which I involved the group of students in an interdisciplinary PhD program to design a knowledge-graph based information system that will help them progress through their education program and obtain their degree. I will present the human-centered design approach that was conducted through three stages\, using different methodological approaches and will involve the seminar attendees in a graph design hands-on exercise using Neo4J Arrows.app. \n\n\n\nPresenter: Dr. Stanislava Gardašević \n\n\n\nStanislava (Stasha) Gardasevic obtained her PhD at the Communication and Information Sciences (CIS) interdisciplinary program\, University of Hawai’i at Manoa (UHM). Her research is focused on creating and visualizing user-centered knowledge graphs for information discovery and exchange in academic settings.  She holds an MLIS degree from Digital Library Learning program (joint degree from Norway\, Estonia\, and Italy) and specializes in metadata for digital resources and interoperability. Her bachelor’s degree is in LIS from the University of Belgrade\, Serbia. Currently\, she is engaged in a re-description and digtization project at Kawaiaho’o Church Archives (Hawai’i)\, and also works as a project manager for a congressional papers digitization project at Hamilton Library\, UHM. She worked as teaching assistant/course instructor at the Library and Information Science (LIS) at UHM for five years. Prior to coming to Hawaii\, as a digital librarian at National Library of Serbia\, she was involved in designing and creating multiple cultural heritage databases and international projects.  \n\n\n\nStasha’s LinkedIn Profile

This presentation will address how academic researchers can engage in equitable\, mutually beneficial relationships with independent community archives. DESCRIPTION:Professor Noopur Raval | October 17 | The Algorithm is a Lie: revisiting blackboxing\, transparency and user engagement with AI \n\n\n\nAbstract | With the rise of complex computational systems and their real-world applications in all domains of life – work\, hiring\, socializing\, criminal justice etc.\, we are often told that algorithmic systems are inherently complex\, require high degrees of technical expertise\, and thus\, are unknowable to a degree. We are also often informed that harmful outcomes of algorithmic systems are caused by “bias” and if we control for bias in training data and design\, we can make these systems better – or even less harmful and racist and sexist. In response\, computational and legal scholars and activists have developed auditing tools to unpack “blackboxed” algorithmic systems and reveal how they function in the hope of producing better social and economic outcomes.  \n\n\n\nThis talk draws on years of ethnographic work across projects and mobilizes case studies to demonstrate how the expertise and unknowability of algorithmic systems is a ruse and a distraction from fundamental questions of values and pedagogy in Computer Science and associated fields. These fundamental challenges are more than just bias or glitches that can be fixed technically. The talk will also argue that algorithmic systems can be investigated as socio-technical systems by non-expert users. In doing so\, the talk invites scholars across LIS fields to develop experiential\, participatory\, archival and experimental methodologies that tackle algorithms as social objects.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio | Dr. Noopur Raval is an assistant professor in Information Studies at UCLA. She is a feminist interdisciplinary interpretivist researcher and educator with a deep interest in how people create and maintain a good life and how technology can support visions of good work and life across the world. She received her PhD in Informatics from UC Irvine and has held positions at UC Santa Cruz\, AI Now Institute at NYU\, Microsoft Research and Xerox Research in the past.
