DESCRIPTION:Connecting the Dots: Naming the Moment and Our Intervention \n\n\n\nLocally and globally\, the attacks on and dismantling of education\, democratic institutions and civic participation\, and human rights and sovereignty\, particularly for historically marginalized populations\, are crystalizing for all to see. These attacks are highly coordinated\, well-funded\, and long entrenched in a range of intersecting ideologies and systems of imperialism and settler colonialism\, autocracy\, white supremacy\, dominionism\, heteropatriarchy\, neoliberalism\, militarism and carcerality\, ableism\, and more. Examples include policy “reforms” and public rhetoric that undermine any number of issues ranging from anti-genocide protest and truthful curriculum to DEI initiatives and LGBTQIA+ inclusion; from teacher professionalism and student civil-rights protections to democratic governance and equitable funding of educational institutions and initiatives; from humanizing learning and teaching at the classroom level\, to community capacity building at the school and district levels\, to a bold vision of education as movement building for justice at the levels of systems and values. What does it mean to advance justice through anti-oppressive education and collective action in this moment? \n\n\n\nThe 15th International Conference on Education and Justice highlights the role of educational scholars in anti-oppressive movement building\, particularly when we produce scholarship collectively and leverage it for public pedagogy. \n\n\n\nSessions will feature projects and works-in-progress that aim to raise public awareness or influence educational policy and practice\, as well as strategies to build our capacity for such interventions. Educators\, scholars\, students\, leaders\, advocates\, and educational organizations and institutions from across the United States and around the world will convene to share collective scholarship for public pedagogy\, as well as to support one another in such work through critical self-reflection and constructive criticism. \n\n\n\nThe 15th Conference returns to California\, and will be held jointly with open meetings of CARE-ED and EDJE so that conference attendees can attend and benefit from these meetings\, and vice versa. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  More Information

DESCRIPTION:Join the UCLA Department of Information Studies for a free workshop on AI\, Time & Futurity with Dr. Maya Indira Ganesh (Leverhulme CFI\, UK). \n\n\n\nTime haunts AI. An origin story in the summer of 1955 that has acquired the status of myth and fact; geopolitical races; the contradictions and entanglements of longtermist and accelerationist ideologies; law and regulation that fail to keep up; promised breakthroughs from the driverless car to superintelligence that fail to arrive\, or seem eternally just around the corner. Computational time is also infrastructural: the lag in software updates pushed to the cloud and then to fleets of driverless cars and mobile phones (Mattern\, 2017). Temporality works unevenly affording ‘just in time’ deliveries for the busy\, but at the cost of bio-social control of delivery workers and on-demand mobility service providers (Sharma\, 2014). \n\n\n\n​This workshop is interested in exploring the temporalities\, ideologies\, and materialities of AI at a moment of complex political reconfigurations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  Register Now

DESCRIPTION:Join the UCLA Department of Information Studies for a book talk by Dr Maya Indira Ganesh (Leverhulme Center for Futures of Intelligence\, Cambridge) based on her first monograph. \n\n\n\nThe “trolley problem” remains a useful exercise in drawing out the differences between utilitarian and deontological approaches to ethics in analytic philosophy. However\, the thought experiment also determined imagining what AI-infused artefacts should be capable of\, suggesting that ethical decision-making becomes a data-driven enterprise rather than a human\, social\, or individualised practice. DESCRIPTION:California’s early elementary classrooms include significant numbers of children raised in multilingual environments. Multilingual learners face inequitable access to linguistically rich instruction\, resulting in persistent disparities in language abilities and overrepresentation in special education. Teachers\, administrators\, parents\, and policy makers are seeking effective ways to reduce achievement gaps and more equitably support learning and development for multilingual learners in monolingual classrooms. This session explores the experiences of young multilingual learners in California’s public school classrooms to identify research-based pedagogy and classroom practices that can effectively create more equitable language learning opportunities for multilingual learners. Strategies focus on: Culturally Responsive Supports\, Home Language Supports\, and English Language Supports. \n\n\n\nDrs. Wishard Guerra and Cohen will share findings from our research practice partnership study: Strategies for Teachers of Young Learners of English (STYLE). They utilized a Practice Based Coaching intervention to support implementation of research-based pedagogical strategies to meet the needs of multilingual learners in early elementary classrooms. SUMMARY:Exploring Critical Media Literacy and the Climate Crisis with Jeff Share\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:In this session we will explore the role of media in shaping our ideas and policies related to the environment and the climate crisis. From climate disinformation to corporate greenwashing and from Indigenous rights to global youth activism\, media are promoting positive and negative messages about the natural world and the environmental challenges. During this interactive workshop we will discuss how different worldviews have influenced our relationships with nature from the past and into the present. We will also address the importance of biophilia (the love of nature) as it relates to the global legal movement for the Rights of Nature and engage in an activity of media production. \n\n\n\nThe event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  Register Now

DESCRIPTION:Become a member of our Writing Project Community! \n\n\n\nJUNE 23 – JULY 17\, 2025Monday – Thursday\, 9AM – 3:30PM at UCLATwo Pre-Institute meetings\, dates TBA\n\n\n\nRefine\, elevate\, and celebrate how you teach writing. Join other educators in the greater Los Angeles area who put students center stage. The UCLA Writing Project invites you to apply for our Summer Invitational Institute where you’ll be immersed in the teaching of writing. You will demonstrate your own prized practices\, learn from a wonderful group of colleagues\, and develop your own writing craft. Issues of social justice will be both the backdrop and foreground of our endeavors.  We’ll point to the intersection of race and language.  We’ll cultivate a space for educational dialogue centered on anti-racism and anti-racist teaching of writing. We’ll take advantage of curated resources\, spend the summer with kindred spirits who choose joy over cynicism. SUMMARY:Early-Career Scholar Series Presenter: Jin Wang Ph.D. and Advanced-Career Scholar Facilitator Maryanne Wolf Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we will introduce a new study we are planning to conduct in regard to the longitudinal relationship between the neural basis of semantic processing and word reading skills in monolingual English-speaking children aged from 5 to 7 to 9 years old using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This study will be an extension of Dr. Wang’s dissertation work where she primarily focused on the longitudinal relationship between the neural basis of phonological awareness and word reading skills. This dissertation work provided systematic neural evidence clarifying the mechanism of why phonetic training facilitates word reading. She hopes that this new neural study can address whether semantic knowledge is crucial in the early stage of word reading and if so\, what the mechanism could be. Dr. Wang is currently working on a pre-registration for this paper and has not yet looked at the data\, she welcomes any suggestions/critics about the idea formation\, hypotheses\, and data analyses plan. This study is based on an existing Open Dataset on monolingual English-speaking children. In the next years after her Ph.D. students on board\, she is interested in collecting pilots and exploring the longitudinal interaction between language skills (e.g.\, phonology and semantics) and reading skills in multilingual populations. Any collaborations are also welcome. \n\n\n\nJin Wang is an assistant professor in the department of education at UCLA started July 2024. She earned her Ph.D. in the Department of Psychology and Human Development at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College in 2022 and did her post doc at Harvard Graduate School of Education. Her research focuses on language development in children from infancy to early elementary years and its relations to reading skills using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). \n\n\n\nPlease direct questions to Dr. Deborah Southern\, desouth@ucla.edu
