SUMMARY:2026 Annual Brown Lecture: Admitted But Not Equal
DESCRIPTION:Join AERA for the 2026 Annual Brown Lecture in Education Research\, featuring Daniel Solórzano\, Professor of Education and Chicana/o and Central American Studies\, and director of UCLA’s Center for Critical Race Studies in Education at UCLA Ed&IS. \n\n\n\nWhat does it mean to be admitted to a university but still denied the opportunity to attend as an equal? \n\n\n\nIn the 2026 Brown Lecture\, Daniel G. Solórzano examines that question through the story of George W. McLaurin\, an educator who\, at 54 years old\, became the first Black student admitted to the University of Oklahoma in 1948. Although McLaurin was permitted to enroll in its doctoral program in educational administration\, the university segregated him from his white classmates—in the classroom\, library\, cafeteria\, and other spaces across campus. \n\n\n\nDrawing on archival research and the scholarship of pioneering legal scholar Derrick Bell\, Solórzano explores McLaurin’s challenge to the university’s treatment of him\, culminating in the landmark 1950 Supreme Court case McLaurin v. Oklahoma State Regents. He recovers McLaurin’s fuller story as an educator\, husband\, and father and considers what his experience—and the decision that helped lay the groundwork for Brown v. Board of Education—reveals about the difference between gaining access to an institution and attending as an equal. \n\n\n\nAt a time when questions about racial inequality and equal opportunity remain deeply contested\, the lecture assesses how patterns of exclusion can persist within educational institutions even after formal legal barriers have been removed—and what McLaurin’s legacy asks of researchers\, educators\, and policymakers today. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n Register Now

SUMMARY:The Power of Connection in Adolescence: Reimagining Schools and Communities for Connected Learning
DESCRIPTION:Adolescence is an important developmental period for connected learning. Inclusive environments\, expanded opportunities\, and meaningful relationships can help diverse learners build connections (within neural and social bonds) as they learn\, belong\, and grow. The 2026 UC|CSU Collaborative Summit brings together educators\, faculty\, administrators\, and researchers in child development to explore how schools and communities can strengthen the social and relational skills that support learning\, well-being\, and future success for adolescents with individual learning differences. \n\n\n\nThe Summit is focused on two tracks: one on “From School to Community: Redesigning Inclusive 6-16 Learning Environments.” and one on “From Access to Agency: Building Digital Equity and Well-Being for Diverse Learners.” Each session features a moderated discussion with developmental scientists and practitioners in education or behavioral/mental health to connect research evidence with real-world practice. Ultimately\, the Summit aims to strengthen the capacity of grade 6-12 and higher education educators\, health professionals\, and system leaders to support the whole adolescent and expand opportunity for all adolescent learners. \n\n\n\n\n Register Now!

SUMMARY:Book Talk with Dr. Lisa M. Stulberg
DESCRIPTION:How to Win a Culture War: LGBTQ+ Social Change Through Pop Culture \n\n\n\nThe UCLA School of Education and Information Studies (SEIS) invites you to a book talk featuring Dr. Lisa M. Stulberg\, author of How to Win a Culture War: LGBTQ+ Social Change Through Pop Culture (University of Chicago Press\, October 2026). \n\n\n\nIn this conversation\, Dr. Stulberg explores how culture workers in Hollywood\, elite sports\, theater\, and activism are transforming American society through their contributions to arts\, sports\, and politics—and why pop culture provides a crucial beacon of hope during challenging political times. \n\n\n\nDrawing on 14 years of research and 170 interviews with TV\, film\, and theater actors and creators\, musicians\, athletes\, and activists\, How to Win a Culture War argues that pop culture is not merely entertainment\, but a primary arena where social change is forged and political progress is sustained. \n\n\n\nAbout the Author: \n\n\n\nLisa M. Stulberg\, PhD\, is Associate Professor of Sociology of Education and Director of the Sociology of Education Program at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture\, Education\, and Human Development. Her research focuses on the sociology of education\, LGBTQ+ social change\, and cultural politics. \n\n\n\nLight refreshments will be provided. \n\n\n\n\n Register

SUMMARY:Critical Quantitative Methodology: Identifying and Remediating Racial (and Other) Forms of Measurement Bias with MIMIC Models
DESCRIPTION:The Developmental Science Research Collaborative is hosting a talk by Dr. Matthew A. Diemer\, Chair of Combined Program in Education and Psychology and Professor of Educational Studies in the Marsal Family School of Education at the University of Michigan. \n\n\n\nAbstract: \n\n\n\nSound measurement is foundational to quantitative methodology in education and the social sciences. However\, the racist history of quantitative methodology and measurement has led some to the conclusion that these approaches are irredeemable. Instead\, acknowledging this history and repurposing quantitative methodology leads toward a more equitable\, anti-racist\, and critical quantitative perspective. \n\n\n\nThis presentation will explore measurement within the Critical Quantitative (CritQuant) framework. CritQuant is anchored by five guiding principles (i.e.\, foundation\, goals\, parity\, subjectivity\, and self-reflexivity) to mitigate racism (and/or other systems of oppression) and advance social justice. \n\n\n\nWithin the CritQuant framework\, MIMIC (Multiple Indicator and MultIple Causes) models help researchers enact equity-oriented measurement by testing for latent mean differences and item intercept differences (i.e.\, DIF\, or ‘differential item functioning’) across identity groups. These are important questions in educational and developmental sciences\, such as whether a measure of perceived discrimination is equally precise across groups. By providing more fair measurement\, this approach positions researchers to contribute to more equitable scholarship\, policy\, and practice. \n\n\n\nNote: The Journal of Research on Educational Effectiveness paper accompanying this talk is available via https://osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/8thpu_v1.
