SUMMARY:Faculty in Focus with Cinthya Salazar: Research and Resistance with Undocu Communities
DESCRIPTION:This Faculty in Focus program will emphasize how research and scholarly writing with and for undocu communities serve as mechanisms to resist the dehumanizing and oppressive systems impacting their trajectories as individuals with precarious immigration statuses. Engaging in humanizing and collaborative research approaches about the experiences of undocu communities can lead to transformative and liberatory practices within and outside higher education settings. Faculty featured in this program will share how they have partnered with undocu communities in their research to center their needs and experiences and resist systemic injustices. Faculty will also discuss the key implications of their research\, particularly as it relates to the 2025 sociopolitical climate. The program features Dr. Kevin Escudero ‘09 from Brown University and Dr. Cinthya Salazar from UCLA. \n\n\n\nThis event can be attended in person at the James West Alumni Center or online via Zoom. Please indicate your attendance preference below. If you select virtual attendance\, you will receive a Zoom registration link with your RSVP confirmation. Be sure to complete the Zoom registration to access the final meeting link. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n Register Now

SUMMARY:Critical Digital Humanities Praxis with Lauren Klein and Roopika Risam
DESCRIPTION:Join two leading scholars in digital humanities and critical data for a discussion of their groundbreaking projects Data by Design and history of data\, as well as their decades-long contributions towards feminist and postcolonial digital humanities—including data visualization. Through a dialogue format\, they will share their experiences and perspectives on pressing issues in digital humanities such as research\, pedagogy\, AI and humanities\, and the dismantling of institutions. With an emphasis on praxis\, this event centers a feminist\, community-based approach to digital humanities as worldbuilding.  \n\n\n\nBios:Lauren Klein is Professor of Data & Decision Sciences and English at Emory University\, where she also directs the Digital Humanities Lab and the Atlanta Interdisciplinary AI Network. Her research brings together computational and critical methods to explore questions of gender\, race and justice\, both in early America and today. Klein is the author (with Catherine D’Ignazio) of the award-winning Data Feminism (MIT Press\, 2020)\, and the editor (with Matthew K. Gold) of Debates in the Digital Humanities (Univ. of Minnesota Press)\, among other books and papers. Her next book\, Data by Design: A Partial History of Visualization and Power\, is forthcoming from MIT Press in Fall 2026. \n\n\n\nRoopika Risam is Associate Professor of Digital Humanities and Social Engagement at Dartmouth. Her research focuses on data histories\, ethics and practices at intersections of postcolonial and African diaspora studies\, digital humanities and critical university studies. Risam is the author of New Digital Worlds: Postcolonial Digital Humanities in Theory\, Praxis\, and Pedagogy; and co-editor of multiple volumes\, most recently Anti-Racist Community Engagement (2023) and The Digital Black Atlantic (2021). She is the director of the Digital Ethnic Futures Consortium\, founding co-editor of Reviews in Digital Humanities\, co-PI of Landback Universities and co-president of the Association for Computers and the Humanities. Risam is finishing her second book\, Insurgent Academics: A Radical Account of Public Humanities (Johns Hopkins University Press)\, and she is working on a trade book on data and empire. SUMMARY:UC|CSU Collaborative 2025 Summit - Investing in Inclusive PK-3 Education
DESCRIPTION:Register Here! \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis year’s virtual summit brings together educators\, administrators\, and researchers in child development to explore both the importance of inclusive PK-3 education and practical strategies to maximize its impact. By bridging research and practice\, this conference aims to empower educators and decision-makers with the knowledge and strategies needed to maximize over $5 billion in annual federal and state funding toward early childhood education—ensuring that resources translate into lasting impacts for young learners. \n\n\n\nOpening Remarks\n\n\n\nSpeakers: Alison Yoshimoto-Towery and Jennie Grammer \n\n\n\nState Context and Purpose \n\n\n\nInvesting in inclusive PK-3 education is one of the most powerful ways to promote long-term academic\, social\, and economic success for all students. Research consistently demonstrates that high-quality early learning experiences shape brain development\, build foundational skills\, and reduce achievement gaps\, and that inclusive settings maximize opportunities and outcomes for students. Realizing the full impact of this investment requires that educators\, administrators\, and policymakers effectively implement evidence-based practices in classrooms and early learning programs. \n\n\n\nKeynote\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Iheoma U. Iruka\, Ph.D. \n\n\n\nCultivating Joy & Learning for All Across the Early Grades \n\n\n\nThe first eight years of life set the foundation for children’s learning\, school\, and life success. Unfortunately\, race\, place\, language\, ability\, and zip code continue to determine whether children have the access and opportunities to flourish and be on track for school and life success. The urgency to act is now! This keynote will examine key evidence-informed factors that ensure all learners have access to joyful and enriching learning opportunities. Specifically\, this presentation will cover some of the key features that can be aligned from PK-3 (i.e.\, the early grades) to improve the pathways for excellence for children and their families.

SUMMARY:ALISE 2025 Annual Conference Featuring Keynote Speaker Dr. Safiya U. Noble
DESCRIPTION:Decolonising Pedagogies: Agency\, Identity\, Practices \n\n\n\nALISE is excited to head to Kansas City this October—and we want you to join the celebration as we mark 125 years of our community! This milestone honors 125 years of ALISE as a vibrant\, collaborative association advancing the field of Library and Information Science. \n\n\n\nThe theme “Decolonising Pedagogies: Agency\, Identity\, Practices\,” infers a profound respect for how we\, in LIS education\, engage with agency\, identity\, and practices in our pedagogy. The theme invokes a critical inquiry into our pedagogy as a holistic and authentic expression of each of us as diverse\, complex\, and divine human beings who research\, teach\, and practice library and information science. By honoring our best selves\, we share that self with our students and community members to inspire them to walk with empathy and care of the human condition as an intricate labyrinth of interdependent identities and heritages essential for knowledge sharing\, professional success\, and personal happiness. \n\n\n\nThis year’s conference speaker is Dr. Safiya U. Noble\, David O. Sears Presidential Endowed Chair of Social Sciences and Professor of Gender Studies\, African American Studies\, and Information Studies at UCLA. She currently serves as a Director of the UCLA DataX Initiative\, leading work in critical data studies for the campus. \n\n\n\nEarly Bird Registration Now Open! \n\n\n\nRegister on or before August 8th to receive a discount on registration. \n\n\n\nAfter this date\, registration rates will increase. \n\n\n\n\n Register Now

SUMMARY:15th International Conference on Education and Justice
DESCRIPTION:Connecting the Dots: Naming the Moment and Our Intervention \n\n\n\nLocally and globally\, the attacks on and dismantling of education\, democratic institutions and civic participation\, and human rights and sovereignty\, particularly for historically marginalized populations\, are crystalizing for all to see. These attacks are highly coordinated\, well-funded\, and long entrenched in a range of intersecting ideologies and systems of imperialism and settler colonialism\, autocracy\, white supremacy\, dominionism\, heteropatriarchy\, neoliberalism\, militarism and carcerality\, ableism\, and more. Examples include policy “reforms” and public rhetoric that undermine any number of issues ranging from anti-genocide protest and truthful curriculum to DEI initiatives and LGBTQIA+ inclusion; from teacher professionalism and student civil-rights protections to democratic governance and equitable funding of educational institutions and initiatives; from humanizing learning and teaching at the classroom level\, to community capacity building at the school and district levels\, to a bold vision of education as movement building for justice at the levels of systems and values. What does it mean to advance justice through anti-oppressive education and collective action in this moment? \n\n\n\nThe 15th International Conference on Education and Justice highlights the role of educational scholars in anti-oppressive movement building\, particularly when we produce scholarship collectively and leverage it for public pedagogy. \n\n\n\nSessions will feature projects and works-in-progress that aim to raise public awareness or influence educational policy and practice\, as well as strategies to build our capacity for such interventions. Educators\, scholars\, students\, leaders\, advocates\, and educational organizations and institutions from across the United States and around the world will convene to share collective scholarship for public pedagogy\, as well as to support one another in such work through critical self-reflection and constructive criticism. \n\n\n\nThe 15th Conference returns to California\, and will be held jointly with open meetings of CARE-ED and EDJE so that conference attendees can attend and benefit from these meetings\, and vice versa. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n More Information

SUMMARY:Workshop: AI\, Time & Futurity
DESCRIPTION:Join the UCLA Department of Information Studies for a free workshop on AI\, Time & Futurity with Dr. Maya Indira Ganesh (Leverhulme CFI\, UK). \n\n\n\nTime haunts AI. An origin story in the summer of 1955 that has acquired the status of myth and fact; geopolitical races; the contradictions and entanglements of longtermist and accelerationist ideologies; law and regulation that fail to keep up; promised breakthroughs from the driverless car to superintelligence that fail to arrive\, or seem eternally just around the corner. Computational time is also infrastructural: the lag in software updates pushed to the cloud and then to fleets of driverless cars and mobile phones (Mattern\, 2017). Temporality works unevenly affording ‘just in time’ deliveries for the busy\, but at the cost of bio-social control of delivery workers and on-demand mobility service providers (Sharma\, 2014). \n\n\n\nThis workshop is interested in exploring the temporalities\, ideologies\, and materialities of AI at a moment of complex political reconfigurations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Register Now

SUMMARY:Auto-Correct: Fantasies & Failures of AI Ethics in the Driverless Car
DESCRIPTION:Join the UCLA Department of Information Studies for a book talk by Dr Maya Indira Ganesh (Leverhulme Center for Futures of Intelligence\, Cambridge) based on her first monograph. \n\n\n\nThe “trolley problem” remains a useful exercise in drawing out the differences between utilitarian and deontological approaches to ethics in analytic philosophy. However\, the thought experiment also determined imagining what AI-infused artefacts should be capable of\, suggesting that ethical decision-making becomes a data-driven enterprise rather than a human\, social\, or individualised practice. Maya Indira Ganesh tracks the language\, materiality\, and culture of epistemic tools that establish safety and automobility as problems to be solved by the driverless car\, examining outputs of AI systems versus what constitutes our social and technological presents and futures. \n\n\n\n\n Register Now

SUMMARY:UC|CSU Collaborative for Neuroscience\, Diversity\, and Learning Summer 2025 Webinar Series: Language Equity in Multilingual Early Childhood Classroom: Lessons from a Research Practice Partnership
DESCRIPTION:California’s early elementary classrooms include significant numbers of children raised in multilingual environments. Multilingual learners face inequitable access to linguistically rich instruction\, resulting in persistent disparities in language abilities and overrepresentation in special education. Teachers\, administrators\, parents\, and policy makers are seeking effective ways to reduce achievement gaps and more equitably support learning and development for multilingual learners in monolingual classrooms. This session explores the experiences of young multilingual learners in California’s public school classrooms to identify research-based pedagogy and classroom practices that can effectively create more equitable language learning opportunities for multilingual learners. Strategies focus on: Culturally Responsive Supports\, Home Language Supports\, and English Language Supports. \n\n\n\nDrs. Wishard Guerra and Cohen will share findings from our research practice partnership study: Strategies for Teachers of Young Learners of English (STYLE). They utilized a Practice Based Coaching intervention to support implementation of research-based pedagogical strategies to meet the needs of multilingual learners in early elementary classrooms. Transitional Kindergarten teacher Ms. Kristina Jefferson will highlight the specific practices she uses in her classroom to engage with families from diverse backgrounds\, to support home and English language development\, and to create a warm and culturally responsive classroom environment. \n\n\n\n\n Register Here!

SUMMARY:Exploring Critical Media Literacy and the Climate Crisis with Jeff Share\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:In this session we will explore the role of media in shaping our ideas and policies related to the environment and the climate crisis. From climate disinformation to corporate greenwashing and from Indigenous rights to global youth activism\, media are promoting positive and negative messages about the natural world and the environmental challenges. During this interactive workshop we will discuss how different worldviews have influenced our relationships with nature from the past and into the present. We will also address the importance of biophilia (the love of nature) as it relates to the global legal movement for the Rights of Nature and engage in an activity of media production. \n\n\n\nThe event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n Register Now
